Design of Song Be Golf Resort
(First golf club in Vietnam to meet international standards)
One of the most difficult designs in the nation, Song Be Golf Resort was Vietnam’s first international championship golf course. The modern golf course replaced the natural scenery of fruit orchards and coconut palms in 1994. The Song Be golf course received a USGA-required official rating in 1995.
Ten lakes are present on the 18-hole resort-style course. Given that Song Be, a tributary of the Mekong, means “little river,” it is not unexpected that water is a factor in eight of the course’s 18 holes, with the tenth hole’s difficult tee shot between two lakes. The difficulty of the golf course is increased by mature tree-lined fairways and undulating greens.
The new Desert Course looks like it belongs in a Western. Seeing all of the relics from the western US makes me think of cowboys and Indians. The 9-holes lack the vegetation, but they still have huge sand waste areas that make for a difficult round.
The overall length of all three combinations exceeds 7000 yards, making it difficult to play off the blue tees. All of the caddies on Song Be’s walking courses are female. One or two players can use a golf cart. Golfers may enjoy the golf course and amenities after their game from a nicely furnished but dated clubhouse with magnificent views of the woodland and dunes.
